Early Morning beach shoot

Just a quick little video I recorded while on the way to Ellis Beach to meet with Jacqui and Mel for a photo shoot. It was very early.

Who are you again?

So I got an email today from someone who added me on Facebook. In the email, she asked me how I got started and what equipment I use. I thought some of you might be interested in the response I sent back, so I've decided to post it all on here. Enjoy!

Free:
How I managed to get where I am now, which at the moment is a steady upward increase of paying clients, is by doing shoots for free and for cheap.

A lot of the stuff I have on facebook I did for free just so I could build my port folio. Sometimes you can get away with finding models who will work for TFP (trade for prints) where they'll give you their time if you give them the photos you take.

Networking:
I'm a bit of a social butterfly. I'm always out networking with people. When I first got my DSLR (a Canon 400D btw), I got a job taking social pics of people in nightclubs. They pay was horrible but it gave me a chance to get out there and meet people. I got my first paid photog job from a girl I took a social snap of when she asked me if I'd shoot a model comp at the nightclub she managed. Then I introduced myself to the models there, told them I was an aspiring photographer and if they ever wanted to do a shoot I was keen to give them photos for free as long as I could use them in my port folio too. Then they told their friends and so forth.

Show the work, show the work, show the work:
Facebook, Flickr, DeviantArt, Model Mayhem, Twitter, etc.
Get accounts to all these sites and upload your stuff. Facebook is the BEST exposure for your photos. I have people come up to me in nightclubs and be all "omg I saw your photos on facebook. When can we do a shoot?" If you're worried about people stealing your shots, watermark your photos.

I shoot with a Canon 400D.
Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens
Canon EF 75-300 1:4-5.6 lens
Canon 50mm f/1.8 prime lens (my favorite!!)
